May 2021: Innovations for Poverty Action

Payout Date: May 23, 2021

Total grants: USD 150,000

Number of grantees: 1

In May 2021 the Global Health and Development Fund transferred an additional $150,000 to Innovations for Poverty Action to support their RCT on the effect of promoting mask use (previously funded by the Fund in July 2020 and December 2020) and assist with scaling the intervention.

This included:

  • The release of $50,000 in contingency funding, which was recommended in November 2020 for continued communications support for the RCT.
  • An additional $100,000 for the grantees to assist other implementers to scale the intervention tested in the RCT. A report on this portion of the grant is available here.

[Update, Sept 2021]: This was the most recent grant of several to Innovations for Poverty Action to support this RCT. A recent working paper published by IPA showed that the intervention tripled mask usage and reduced symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infections, demonstrating that promoting community mask-wearing can improve public health.
